Jefferson High School Boundary Change 2027: What Portland Home Buyers and Sellers Need to Know

Starting in fall 2027, Portland Public Schools ends Jefferson High School's dual assignment, so North and Northeast Portland buyers and sellers should check a home's assigned high school before they move.

Portland Public Schools is ending Jefferson High School's dual assignment policy. Beginning with students entering ninth grade in fall 2027, families who live in the Jefferson boundary will have one assigned neighborhood high school: Jefferson. If you are buying or selling a home in North or Northeast Portland, the assigned high school for an address may be different from what it was a year ago.

Quick facts

  • What changed: The Portland School Board voted on January 13, 2026, to end Jefferson's dual assignment and adopt new attendance boundaries for Jefferson, Grant, McDaniel and Roosevelt high schools. (Willamette Week)
  • When: The new boundaries take effect for the 2027–28 school year. (PPS)
  • Who: Students entering ninth grade in fall 2027 (the Class of 2031) and other new students. Current high school students are not affected. (PPS)
  • Not changing: Elementary and middle school boundaries. (PPS)

What was dual assignment?

Since 2011, students living in Jefferson's boundary could choose to attend Jefferson or one of three other comprehensive high schools: Grant, McDaniel or Roosevelt. (OPB) Over time, many families chose other schools. In 2025, Jefferson enrolled 391 students, while more than 1,300 students from its attendance area attended other schools. (Concordia Neighborhood Association)

The board ended dual assignment and made Jefferson a comprehensive neighborhood high school. The district projects that each of the four affected high schools will enroll more than 1,100 students by 2030–31. (OPB)

Which areas feed into Jefferson, Grant and Roosevelt?

The adopted plan assigns these elementary school attendance areas to Jefferson High School: (PPS)

  • Beach
  • Boise-Eliot/Humboldt
  • Chief Joseph
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (including its Chinese Immersion program)
  • Faubion
  • Sabin
  • Vernon
  • Woodlawn

Within the former dual assignment area, there are two exceptions:

  • Irvington is assigned to Grant High School.
  • Peninsula and the Beach Spanish Immersion program are assigned to Roosevelt High School.

Several of these schools share names with Portland neighborhoods, including Sabin, Vernon, Woodlawn, Humboldt and Irvington. Faubion serves part of the Concordia neighborhood. School attendance areas do not follow neighborhood lines exactly, so always check the specific address.

What this means if you are buying a home

If school assignment is part of your decision, confirm it for every home you are serious about. Here is how:

  1. Look up the address. Use the PPS district map and school locator to find the address's elementary school, then compare it with the list above.
  2. Do not rely on listing websites alone. School information on listing sites and third-party apps may not reflect the 2027–28 boundaries. The district is the authoritative source.
  3. Know your timing. If your child will enter ninth grade in fall 2027 or later, the new boundaries apply. A student already in high school is not affected.
  4. Ask about the sibling policy. Under PPS policy, a student may transfer to their former neighborhood high school after a boundary change if an older sibling attends there. Families apply during the eighth-grade transfer cycle. (PPS)
  5. Understand transfer options. Families can still apply through the PPS transfer petition process. Benson Polytechnic, a focus option school, and the Metropolitan Learning Center, an alternative school, remain available. (PPS)
  6. Watch for future changes. PPS has described this decision as the first step in a broader districtwide review. Check current district maps before you make an offer. (PPS)

What this means if you are selling a home

If your home is in North or Northeast Portland, buyers with school-age children may ask about the new boundaries. A few practical steps:

  • Keep school information in your listing accurate. If school assignments are mentioned, make sure they reflect the 2027–28 boundaries, and encourage buyers to verify with the district.
  • Be ready for questions. Buyers may ask which high school your address feeds into. Pointing them to the PPS school locator is the clearest answer.
  • Avoid predictions. It is too early to say how the change will affect home prices in any part of the city. Pricing should rest on current comparable sales and market conditions.

The Jefferson High School modernization

Jefferson is also getting a new building. PPS reports a final modernization budget of $465 million, with completion targeted for fall 2029. Students remain on the existing campus during construction. (PPS) The board also approved funding for up to two additional full-time positions at Jefferson each year through 2030–31 to expand course offerings. (OPB)

Common questions

When does the Jefferson High School boundary change take effect?

The new boundaries take effect in fall 2027, for the 2027–28 school year. They apply to students entering ninth grade that year (the Class of 2031) and to other new students. Students already in high school are not affected.

Which elementary schools feed into Jefferson High School under the new boundaries?

The Jefferson boundary includes the attendance areas of Beach, Boise-Eliot/Humboldt, Chief Joseph, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Faubion, Sabin, Vernon and Woodlawn. The MLK Jr. Chinese Immersion program also continues to Jefferson. Beach's Spanish Immersion program goes to Roosevelt.

Can students in the Jefferson boundary still choose Grant, McDaniel or Roosevelt?

Not automatically. Dual assignment ends after the 2026–27 school year. Families can still apply through the PPS transfer petition process, and a sibling policy lets a student follow an older sibling who already attends their former neighborhood high school.

Which high school will Irvington and Peninsula students attend?

Irvington Elementary's attendance area is assigned to Grant High School. Peninsula Elementary's attendance area is assigned to Roosevelt High School.

How do I find out which high school a Portland address is assigned to?

Use the Portland Public Schools district map and school locator at pps.net to find the address's elementary school, then check the district's 2027–28 high school attendance map. School boundaries do not follow neighborhood names, so check the exact address, and contact the PPS Enrollment and Transfer Center with questions.
